Rhythmic Gymnastics is the only discipline of the Gymnastics program to only be practiced by women. There has only been one change in its program: a team event was added in Atlanta 1996.

Eastern European countries have been proven to be dominant in Rhythmic Gymnastics, winning a total of 36 out of 45 possible medals, with Soviet states winning 31. Russia and the Soviet Union have won twelve gold medals, while Spain, Ukraine and Canada all only have won one.
