The Philippines first sent athletes to compete at the Olympic Games in 1924, making it the first country from Southeast Asia to compete and win a medal. The nation has competed at every Summer Olympic Games since then except the 1980 Summer Olympics, when they joined the American-led boycott. Filipino athletes have also competed at the Winter Olympic Games on six different occasions since 1972. The Philippines is the first nation in the tropics to ever participate in the Winter Olympic Games.
Filipino athletes have won a total of fourteen Olympic medals, with boxing as the top medal-producing sport. After Mongolia claimed its first gold medal at Beijing 2008, the Philippines used to hold the record for the most medals without a gold, until weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz topped the podium with the country's first gold at Tokyo 2020.
The Philippine Olympic Committee was founded in 1911 and duly recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1929.[1]
