Peru first participated at the Olympic Games officially in 1936 and has sent athletes to compete in most editions of the Summer Olympic Games since then, missing Helsinki 1952. Meanwhile, Vancouver 2010 marked Peru's official debut at the Winter Olympic Games, with three athletes, namely alpine skiers Oettl siblings Manfred and Ornella; and cross-country skier Roberto Carcelén, participating in two respective sports.
Peruvian athletes have won a total of four medals, a gold and three silver, at the Olympic Games. Three of them were attributed to the shooting squad, including a gold from Edwin Vásquez in the men's 50 m pistol at London 1948, with the remainder awarded to the women's volleyball team in Seoul 1988.
The Peruvian Olympic Committee was founded in 1924 and duly recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1936.
