North Korea, or officially known as Democratic People's Republic of Korea, first participated at the Summer Olympic Games in 1972, although North Korean athletes have appeared before, as part of Japan. The nation has attended Winter Olympic Games since 1964.

Chinese Taipei has won 57 medals at the Olympic Games, of which most in weightlifting and wrestling, with boxing and judo also not far behind, and has won medals at every edition of the Summer Olympic Games it competed in. The nation has also won two medals at the Winter Olympic Games, in 1964 and 1992. Some North Korean athletes competed as Korea at Pyeongchang 2018.

The Olympic Committee of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea was created in 1953 and recognized in 1957.
