North Borneo participated at the Olympic Games of 1956, which would be the nation's only Olympic appearance. After the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, its athletes and the representatives from Malaya would come to represent Malaysia. The nation did not compete at the Winter Olympic Games, and did not win any medals at the Summer Olympic Games.

The North Borneo Olympic Committee, or the Sabah Olympic Committee, was created in 1955 and recognized in 1956. After the nation's Olympic appearance, the Olympic Committee merged with the Olympic Committees of Malaya, Singapore, and Sarawak to form the Olympic Council in Malaysia in 1963.
