Nancy Hogshead is a swimmer who has competed for the United States. She competed at the 1984 Summer Olympic Games. She was also selected to swim for the U.S. team at Moscow 1980 but the American-led boycott denied her the opportunity to participate.
Hogshead was widely regarded as one of the world's top female American swimmers through the 1980s. She tied for gold with her teammate Carrie Steinseifer in the 100 metres freestyle and helped the American women reclaim their 4x100 metres freestyle relay title after eight years. She added a silver in the 200 metres individual medley. She was also expected to claim her third medal in the 200 metres butterfly after trailing the leader Mary Meagher at the final turn, but she suffered a bronchial spasm near the end of the race that resulted in a diagnosis of asthma, missing the podium by 0.07 of a second. Hogshead rebounded from her unexpected health problem to close out her Olympic career with another gold as a freestyle swimmer of the U.S. women's 4x100 metres medley relay team. With a total of four medals (three golds and a silver), she became the most decorated female swimmer at the Games.
