Mitsuo Tsukahara was a gymnast who competed for Japan. He competed at the 1968, 1972, and 1976 Summer Olympic Games. He is widely regarded as one of the most successful male Japanese gymnasts of all-time. Among his three Olympic trips, he won a total of nine medals with five of them gold.

Tsukahara significantly contributed to the Japanese men's gold-medal triumph in the team portion at three consecutive Olympiads. At Munich 1972, he assisted the Japanese men's team to dominate the entire gymnastics competition, taking 15 out of the 21 individual medals awarded to the gymnasts. Apart from his team's fourth-straight title defense, he also notched his first individual gold on the horizontal bar and enjoyed his teammates Sawao Katō and Shigeru Kasamatsu taking the silver and bronze as the Japanese men swept the podium for the first and only time in the event's history. He switched spots with top four finalist Kato from the previous Games to claim the bronze on the rings.

The team portion turned into a close competition between Japan and Soviet Union for the gold at Montreal 1976, with Tsukahara assisting the Japanese men to their fifth straight triumph over the latter by 0.4 of a point. He returned to successfully defend his title on the horizontal bar, becoming the second gymnast in the event's history to attain such feat since Takashi Ono in 1960. He also performed a roundoff over the horse into a backward salto, with or without twist, on the vault to finish second behind the Soviet favorite Nikolai Andrianov by 0.075 of a point. Tsukahara closed out his Olympic career by adding a bronze each in the all-around final and on the parallel bars.

Tsukahara officially retired from competitive gymnastics in 1978. He married fellow gymnast Chieko Oda and remained connected to the gymnastics world, partly because of his son Naoya Tsukahara, a three-time Olympian from 1996 to 2004 and a gold medalist as a member of the Japanese men's team at Athens 2004.

Tsukahara passed away on 29 March 2024 at the age of 76, citing an undisclosed cause.
