Mel Stewart is a swimmer who has competed for the United States. He competed at the 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympic Games.
Stewart started his Olympic career in Seoul 1988. There, he finished fifth in the men's 200 metres butterfly, trailing the winner Michael Groß by a couple of seconds.
After Groß retired from swimming in 1991, Stewart emerged as the world's leading swimmer and the world holder in the 200 metres butterfly when he arrived at his second Games in 1992. As a clear and overwhelming favorite, he pulled away from the rest of the field to comfortably win a gold and set a new Olympic record (1:56.26), cutting Groß' existing mark by almost a full second. Though he failed to attain a medal in the other half of the butterfly double (100), Stewart swam through the butterfly leg in the heats of the men's 4x100 metres medley relay before Pablo Morales replaced him on the squad that defended the title for the third straight streak in the final. He also received a bronze as a member of the U.S. men's team in the 4x200 metres freestyle relay.
