Markus Rogan is a swimmer who has competed for Austria. He competed at the 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
When he first competed in Sydney 2000, Rogan failed to reach the semifinal rounds of his individual races. His major Olympic success transpired four years later in Athens. There, he claimed a silver each in the backstroke double (100 and 200) with a personal best time, trailing the winner Aaron Peirsol twice by a couple of seconds. With this feat, he became the first Austrian swimmer to win an Olympic medal after almost a century.
At his third Games in 2008, Rogan set an Austrian record time (1:55.49) in the 200 metres backstroke, but he missed the podium by almost half a second behind the bronze medalist Arkady Vyatchanin.
After swimming the backstroke in three straight editions, he shifted his focus to individual medley. At his fourth and last Games in 2012, Rogan entered as one of the medal contenders in the 200 metres individual medley. However, he was disqualified from the semifinals for committing an illegal dolphin kick from the backstroke to breaststroke turn as ruled by the judges. He and the Austrian Swimming Federation lodged a protest, but it was denied. Rogan was also selected to carry the Austrian flag during the opening ceremony.
