Maria Abakumova is a track and field athlete who has competed for Russia. She competed at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
She was one of two Russian athletes to compete in the women's javelin throw competition in 2008, together with Maria Yakovenko. In the qualification, her first throw was a distance of 61.23 metres, only 27 centimetres shy of direct qualification. Her second throw of 63.48 metres resulted in a third place in qualification group A and a fourth place in both qualification groups combined. She started the final very strong, ranked first after the first throw with a distance of 69.32 metres, which she improved upon with a new national record of 70.78 metres in the fourth attempt. Only reigning world champion Barbora Spotakova was eventually able to beat her in an ultimate attempt and with a new European record. The results of Abakumova would be nullified in September 2016 after a retest tested positive for doping.
Four years later, she was the only Russian to compete in the javelin throw competition, and once again directly qualified for the final after a throw of 63.25 metres. She ranked seventh in the qualification and third in qualification group B. This time, her performance in the final was less successful. She failed her first attempt, after which throws of 59.34 metres and 58.70 metres were not enough to continue in the final, resulting in tenth place. Similar to her results of 2008, this was later nullified after testing positive for doping.
She is married to Dmitry Tarabin.
