Malta first participated at the Olympic Games in 1928 and has sent athletes to compete in sporadic editions of the Summer Olympic Games since then, missing Los Angeles 1932, Helsinki 1952, Melbourne 1956, Tokyo 1964, and Montreal 1976. The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi marked Malta's official debut at the Winter Olympic Games, with Élise Pellegrin participating in alpine skiing.[1] Currently, Maltese athletes attended a total of twenty editions at the Games (seventeen Summer and three Winter) but neither of them has ever won a single medal.
Malta's most significant Olympic moment occurred in Amsterdam 1928, when the men's national water polo team scored a first-round victory against Luxembourg 3–1 before losing to France in the subsequent round. For the individual events, double trap shooter and Worlds medalist William Chetcuti missed the final round by a relatively slim margin, losing at the three-way tie breaker for sixth place in Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 and finishing ninth in London 2012.
The Maltese Olympic Committee was established in 1928 and duly recognized by the International Olympic Committee in 1936.
