Preview[]
Thirteen qualified for the event, with Germany being the main favorite, after winning most of the other events in the previous few days, as well as being the reigning Olympic champions in this event. The other medal contenders were Austria, winning the Men's singles, Canada and the USA, whose Summer Britcher held a track record in the Women's singles.
Despite being a combination of the three other events in luge, the youngest luger was Ivan Nagler, while the youngest lugers in the men's singles and the women's singles didn't participate. However, the second-youngest and third-youngest lugers in the team relay were Madeleine Egle and Kristers Aparjods, who did participate in the singles events. Jozef Ninis was the oldest athlete, competing in the men's singles and the team relay. This event only appeared for the second time, after 2014.

The track record was broken by 12 of the 13 countries, only Ukraine missing out, due to a near-fall at the beginning of the event. Germany even broke the track record with almost 5 seconds, winning the gold with almost 0.3 seconds to Canada, which had a strong finish, catching up to Austria in the third part of their relay. Italy's Andrea Voetter was the second-fastest woman, but with the sixth-fastest time in both the men's and the doubles, Italy dropped down to fifth, with the USA overtaking them by only 0.002 seconds. Germany set the individual fastest time in the women's and the doubles part of the relay, while Roman Repilov was the fastest man, even though the Olympic Athletes from Russia finished only seventh.
Germany defended the Olympic title in the second appearance of the event at the Olympic Games. As part of the team, Tobias Arlt, Natalie Geisenberger, and Tobias Wendl became the lugers with the most gold medals in Olympic history.
