Latvia first participated as an independent country at the Olympic Games in 1924, although athletes might have appeared before as Russian Empire. Between 1952 and 1988, it competed as a part of Soviet Union. Since 1992, it once again appeared as independent representation.
Latvia has won 31 medals at the Olympic Games, though with no dominant sports across its performances. Athletics and luge have the most with five medals, followed by cycling, weightlifting, and bobsleigh with three.
The Latvian Olympic Committee was created in 1922 and recognized in 1923. After the invasion of the Soviet Union, the committee was reinstated in 1988, and recognized in 1991.
