Kathleen Nord was a swimmer who competed for East Germany. She competed at the 1988 Summer Olympic Games. She was also selected to the East German team for Los Angeles 1984, but the Eastern Bloc boycott denied her the opportunity to participate.
In the 400 metres individual medley, Nord started the race with an early lead on the butterfly leg but she could not keep her pace and never recovered towards the final laps, slipping off the podium to fifth. She rebounded from her medley flop to launch a late surge on the home stretch for the 200 metres butterfly title over Birte Weigang by four tenths of a second (0.4).
In 1990, Nord retired from competitive swimming. She moved to the United States to pursue her college studies and coaching career before returning to her hometown Magdeburg in 2013 with her four daughters. There, she spent the remaining years of her life until she passed away on 24 February 2022, citing a lingering illness.
