Kōhei Uchimura is a gymnast who has competed for Japan. He competed at the 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020 Summer Olympic Games. He is widely considered as the most decorated Japanese gymnast in history, winning a total of seven medals (three golds and four silver) throughout his Olympic career.
Uchimura arrived at his first Olympics in 2008 as one of the potential medal favorites in the all-around gymnastics routines. He contributed to the Japanese men's runner-up feat in the team all-around by competing on the floor exercise, vault, parallel bars, and horizontal bar. He also finished second behind the Chinese favorite Yang Wei in the individual side, handing Japan its first Olympic medal after 24 years. He also obtained the highest mark of the meet on the floor with a score of 15.825 (double Arabian piked half out, triple twist dismount) and performed a spectacular high bar routine (Kolman, piked Kovacs).
Four years later in London, Uchimura fell from the pommel horse during his dismount in the team all-around final. The Japanese coaches appealed the scoring on this performance as he still landed on his feet and felt it should have counted as a full dismount, albeit with a large penalty, increasing Japan's total points to secure a silver behind China. On the individual side, Uchimura rebounded from a ninth-place feat in the qualifying stage to dominate the men's individual all-around final with a gold medal and a score of 92.690. With his gold-medal triumph, Uchimura became the first Japanese gymnast to claim the title since Kōji Gushiken topped the podium at Los Angeles 1984. He also added another silver on the men's floor exercise routine with a score of 15.800 through a tie-breaking procedure.
At his third Olympics in 2016, Uchimura served as the captain of the men's artistic gymnastics squad. He anchored the Japanese men to solidify their gold-medal triumph in the team all-around routine, reclaiming the title for Japan and the first time since Athens 2004. Two days after the team event, Uchimura defended his men's individual all-around title with a total score of 92.365, becoming the first gymnast to attain this feat in 44 years. Moreover, he joined his countryman Sawao Kato as the only gymnasts to receive two golds and a silver medal in the men's individual all-around at three consecutive Olympiads.
When his country hosted the 2020 Summer Olympics, Uchimura qualified only for the horizontal bar and decided to skip the parallel bars. After committing technical errors in his assigned routine, he placed twentieth in the qualifying stage and failed to enter the eight-man apparatus final.
On 10 January 2022, Uchimura officially retired from competitive artistic gymnastics.
