He took part in the postponed Olympic Games of 2020, competing in the men's Greco-Roman wrestling weight class below 87 kilograms. He qualified for the competition by winning the European continental qualification tournament, but was drawn in the first round against the fourth seed Daniel Gregorich Hechavarria. Despite being only a single point ahead after the first period, he wasn't able to turn this around and lost the bout 1 - 3. The Cuban would lose in the next round against Mohamed Metwally, but after Metwally lost his semifinal, both would not get a second chance in the repechages for the bronze medal. Abbasov finished the competition on thirteenth place.
