Iouri Bachkatov was a swimmer who competed for the Soviet Union and the Unified Team. He competed at the 1988 and 1992 Summer Olympic Games.
At his first Olympics in 1988, Bachkatov helped the Soviet team snare a silver in the men's 4x100 metres freestyle relay with a new European record time, trailing the Americans by almost two seconds. In the 100 metres freestyle, he finished outside the podium in fifth place with his teammate Gennadi Prigoda surging ahead of him under 50 seconds.
Four years later in Barcelona, Bachkatov returned to his second Games as a member of the Unified Team. In the 4x100 metres freestyle relay, he fought off a challenge against Thomas Jager in the third leg but could not catch him to boot the Unified Team to the front before handing his duties to Alexander Popov at the final exchange. With Popov unable to surge past the Americans, Bachkatov and the rest of his teammates finished the race with a repeated feat from Seoul.
In 1993, Bachkatov retired from competitive swimming. He moved to Chile to work as a trainer and swimming coach for the national team and spend the remaining years of his life until he passed away on 3 September 2022, citing an undisclosed cause.
