Ignazio Abate has competed for Italy

Ignazio Abate is a football player who has competed for Italy. He competed at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games.

He was one of two Italian football players in Beijing to play for Torino, together with defender Marco Motta, and despite not being part of the starting eleven in Beijing, Abate still played in every match in the competition. In the first match against Honduras, he replaced Giuseppe Rossi as the first substitution of the team, and they maintained their 3 - 0 lead until the end, when Abate received a caution in the final minutes of the match. In the second group stage match against South Korea, Abate entered the pitch at a 2 - 0 lead, replacing Sebastian Giovinco with fifteen minutes left in the match. The Italian team was able to build on their lead, winning once again with a three-goal difference with a match to go. The third group stage match once again followed a similar timeline for Abate, though this time he replaced Robert Acquafresca twenty minutes before the final whistle, eventually leading to a goalless draw against Cameroon. Italy was pitched up against Belgium in the quarterfinals, which finished second in group C. Once again not being a part of the starting eleven, but Abate substituted Luca Cigarini after an hour of playing, when the team was 1 - 2 down. However, after not much longer than twenty minutes, Abate had to be substituted off, with Antonio Candreva replacing him. In total, Abate played 87 minutes in four matches.
