The men's tournament of Handball 2020 during the 2020 Summer Olympics was held on 24 July-7 August 2021 in the Yoyogi National Stadium. With 12 teams competing, the event was won by the team from France, with Denmark taking the silver medal and Spain taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of two groups of six, with each team playing another once. Standings are primarily based on win/loss-record, with the team with the most points after a certain time limit winning a match. The top four ranked teams advance to the quarterfinals. After this, a single knockout phase is played, with the winners of the quarterfinals advancing to the semifinals, and the winners of the final winning the event.

Preview[]

Twelve teams qualified for the event with reigning world champion and defending Olympic champion Denmark and 2008 and 2012 Olympic champion and 2011, 2015, and 2017 world champion France as the big favorites for the title. 2013 world champion Spain competed with the most experienced team, but also runners-up at the 2017 world championships Norway, defending bronze medalists Germany, and runners-up at the most recent world championships Sweden as some of the other big teams in the field.
