Greece is recognized as the main origin of the Ancient Olympic Games, held in Greek territories between 776 BC and at least 393 AD. With the introduction of the Modern Olympic Games, the event returned to Greece, with the first edition being hosted by Athens. It is one of the few countries to have participated at every single edition of the Summer Olympic Games, with the country being celebrated during each opening ceremony. As per tradition, the Olympic Flame is always ignited in Olympia, Greece, and carried to the Panathinaiko Stadium, one of the venues where the first Olympic Games were held in 1896.
Greece has won 120 medals at the Summer Olympic Games, most of which in Athletics, Weightlifting, and Shooting. The country has yet to win a medal at the Winter Olympic Games.
The Hellenic Olympic Committee was founded in 1894 and recognized in 1895.
