Buchanan maintained his pace in a vain attempt to chase the favorites Pedro Pablo Morales and Michael Groß toward the final stretch for the bronze with an improved Australian record from the prelims in 53.85, 0.77 of a second behind Groß' new world record. He also helped his teammates Mark Kerry, Peter Evans, and Mark Stockwell secure a third spot over the West German men's team by more than a full second in the 4x100 metres medley relay.
