Gina Gogean is a gymnast who has competed for Romania. She competed at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympic Games. She is widely regarded as one of the most decorated female Romanian gymnasts in the 1990s. She won a total of five medals throughout her Olympic career without attaining a single gold. She was officially born in 1977, but in 2002, a Romanian newspaper published hospital documents showing the year of birth as 1978, which would have made her ineligible for some of her earliest senior meets.
Gogean arrived at her first Olympics in 1992 as the youngest member of the experienced Romanian team. She contributed some of the highest marks on the Romanian women that culminated in a runner-up finish during the team all-around event. Though her teammate and close friend Lavinia Miloșovici was one of the stars at Barcelona 1992, Gogean established herself as a gymnast to foresee in the future.
Four years later in Atlanta, the Romanian women, including Gogean, were heavily favored to win the gold. Injuries among the gymnasts and a lackluster performance in both compulsory and optional routines on the team portion dropped them to third. Nevertheless, Gogean performed impressively in the all-around routine and finished second behind the winner Lilia Podkopayeva of Ukraine by 0.018 points. She added two more bronze on the vault and balance beam, bringing her career medal haul to a total of five.
Gogean officially retired from competitive gymnastics in 1998, aged 21.
