Preview[]
Six teams qualified for the inaugural edition of the event, with China and the United States as the favorites for the title, both with a team full of members from the top 10 of the world rankings. Switzerland also had a strong team on the male side, with both members featured in the top 4 of the world rankings, with Canada as another big medal contender. Belarus and ROC completed the field, as two big potential outsiders in a small field.
Miha Fontaine was the youngest competitor in the field at the age of 18, as one of two athletes born in the 21st century. He was two years younger than Alexandra Baer, with another two-year gap to Noe Roth, Marion Thenault, and Pirmin Werner, also making Switzerland the youngest team collectively, followed by Canada. Maksim Gustik was the oldest competitor in the field at the age of 33, followed by the entire Chinese team of Xu Mengtao, Qi Guangpu, and Jia Zongyang. Despite the event making it's first Olympic appearance, there were plenty of competitors with previous Olympic experience, including the full Chinese team who were due to start at their fourth edition of the Olympic Games. Ashley Caldwell was also due to make her fourth Olympic Games, followed by Hanna Huskova and Ilia Burov with their third.
