The men's ski big air of Freestyle Skiing 2022 during the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 7-9 February 2022 in the Big Air Shougang. With 31 athletes competing, the event was won by Birk Ruud from Norway, with Colby Stevenson from United States taking the silver medal and Henrik Harlaut from Sweden taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two separate rounds. Each competitor performs three times in the qualification, with the athletes with the twelve best scores (in either run) advancing to the final. The athletes advancing to the final get another three runs, with the best two scores counting towards the final ranking. The competitor with the highest aggregate score in the best two runs in the final is the winner.
Preview[]
Thirty-one athletes qualified for the inaugural edition of the event with Matej Svancer as the leader of the world rankings and Oliwer Magnusson as the reigning world champion, and plenty of other medal contenders in the field. Edouard Therriault and Kim Gubser won silver and bronze at the most recent world championships, Fabian Boesch and Henrik Harlaut had won gold and silver at the world championships in 2017, and Andri Ragettli, Alexander Hall, and Colby Stevenson were currently ranked in the top 5 of the world rankings. Other potential medal contenders also included Mac Forehand, Antoine Adelisse, Teal Harle, and Birk Ruud.
He Jinbo was the youngest athlete in the field as one of three athletes younger than 18, together with Daniel Bacher and Matej Svancer. Six other athletes were still under the age of 21, though age differences in the field were small, with Henrik Harlaut and James Woods as the oldest competitors at the age of 30. Nicholas Goepper and Jesper Tjader followed at 27, though all four made their third Olympic appearance in Beijing, together with Antoine Adelisse and Fabian Boesch. With the event making its Olympic debut, seventeen out of thirty-one athletes followed with their first Olympic appearance.
