The women's ski halfpipe of Freestyle Skiing 2018 during the 2018 Winter Olympics was held on 19 February 2018 in the Phoenix Snow Park. With 24 athletes competing, the event was won by Cassie Sharpe from Canada, with Marie Martinod from France taking the silver medal and Brita Sigourney from USA taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two phases. The qualification phase exists out of two performances by each athlete. The twelve highest scores of the qualification qualify for the final. In the final, each participant performs three times. The best run in the final is counted. The competitor with the highest score in the final is the winner.
Preview[]
Twenty-four athletes qualified for the event with all three reigning medalists returning to compete. The athletes representing the United States had a lot of chances for at least one medal, with favorite Brita Sigourney, defending Olympic champion Maddie Bowman, reigning Olympic silver medalist in slopestyle Devin Logan, and Annalisa Drew. Other medal contenders were Canada's Cassie Sharpe and reigning silver medalist Marie Martinod. However, the younger generation would be a force to be reckoned with, with China's Wu Meng, Zhang Kexin, and Chai Hong, and South Korean Jang Yu-jin. Fourteen skiers made their Olympic debut, including Elizabeth Swaney and Laila Friis-Salling at the age of 33.
Summary[]
Qualification[]
In the qualification, Cassie Sharpe, Marie Martinod, and Brita Sigourney established their quality with two runs with over 90 points, confirming their expectations as medal contenders. Behind them, Annalisa Drew, reigning medalists Ayana Onozuka and Maddie Bowman, and Zhang Kexin finished stable performances to confirm their place in the final. However, the battle for the remaining five places for the final was fierce. German Sabrina Cakmakli was able to get the only other score above 80 points, before falling in the second run. Rowan Cheshire, who was also selected for Sochi 2014 but had to withdraw due to injury, Valeriya Demidova, and veterans Rosalind Groenewoud and Anais Caradeux (in extremis) finished the top 12, just 1.2 points above Elisabeth Gram, Saori Suzuki, and Devin Logan.
Final[]
The three best qualifiers continued their form, this time with Drew performing well too, with an almost 8-point difference between number 4 Drew and fifth-placed Demidova after one run. After the second run, this difference was decreased to six points, the top 5 staying intact after two runs. The third and last run, however, saw the final all-or-nothing attempts of the competitors, with four out of eleven skiers improving their score, and three others crashing. Onozuka was able to catch up to Demidova with her last run, grasping fifth place, while Drew and Sigourney improved their scores to retain their positions. After Martinod crashed, ensuring that she wouldn't be able to claim the gold medal, Sharpe knew she wouldn't need to take any further risks. Anais Caradeux, finishing 12th in the first edition of the event four years prior, didn't compete in the final despite qualifying.
Results[]
Cassie Sharpe won the Olympic title at her first appearance at the Olympic Games. Marie Martinod wasn't able to improve on her result of four years prior, winning her second consecutive medal in the event. Brita Sigourney won the bronze medal, after she finished sixth in 2014. Annalisa Drew finished just next to the podium in her second Olympic appearance, while Ayana Onozuka and Maddie Bowman were not able to defend their Olympic medals of 2014.
