The competition exists out of two separate stages. The qualification stage includes the four events of figure skating with short programs of the men's singles, the ladies' singles, and the pair skating, and the short dance. The teams get points based on their result in the round, and after the qualification, the five best teams advance to the final. The final includes the free programs of the singles and pair events, and the free dance. After the eight events, the team with the most points wins the competition.

Ten teams qualified for the event, with Canada and the Olympic Athletes from Russia as the big contenders for the title. The Canadian team had a very strong dance pair with Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue, and also had big medal contenders in the other three events. The defending champions of the Olympic Athletes from Russia were headlined by the favorites for the ladies' singles Evgenia Medvedeva and Alina Zagitova, but the other three events had some of the potential outsiders for their respective events. Japan had something similar with Yuzuru Hanyu and Shoma Uno in the men's singles, and the United States could also not be underestimated. Italy featured the reigning bronze medalist in the ladies' singles Carolina Kostner, China included the former silver medalist of the pair skating Zhang Hao, and Germany featured the two-time bronze medalist Aljona Savchenko in the pair skating.
