The men's singles of Figure Skating 2018 during the 2018 Winter Olympics was held on 16-17 February 2018 in the Gangneung Ice Arena. With 30 athletes competing, the event was won by Yuzuru Hanyu from Japan, with Shoma Uno from Japan taking the silver medal and Javier Fernandez from Spain taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two separate rounds. The first round allows the competitors to perform a routine of around 2:40 minutes, after which the athletes with the twenty-four best scores perform another routine of around 4:00 minutes. The competitor with the best score after two rounds is the winner.
Preview[]
Thirty athletes qualified for the event, with two-time defending Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu as the man to beat. However, there were quite a few big potential medal contenders, including the reigning world champion Nathan Chen, European champion and fourth-placed finisher of 2014 Javier Fernandez, bronze medalist at the world championships Vincent Zhou, and Shoma Uno. Patrick Chan and Denis Ten, who won the other medals at the individual figure skating four years prior, were also still among the big outsiders, just like Jin Boyang, European number two Dmitri Aliev, Adam Rippon, and Mikhail Kolyada.
Cha Jun-hwan was the youngest competitor in the field at the age of 16, and was only a year younger than Vincent Zhou, who was the only other competitor born after 1 January 2000, and just over two years younger than Deniss Vasiljevs. Alexei Bychenko was the oldest competitor in the field at the age of 30, though he did not have the most Olympic experience: Patrick Chan, Denis Ten, Michal Brezina, and Javier Fernandez all made their Olympic debuts in 2010 and would be competing at the figure skating competition for the third time. Bychenko was over a year older than Chafik Besseghier and almost two years older than Adam Rippon, as the only three athletes born before 1 January 1990.
