The ice dancing of Figure Skating 2018 during the 2018 Winter Olympics was held on 19-20 February 2018 in the Gangneung Ice Arena. With 24 pairs competing, the event was won by Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue from Canada, with Guillaume Cizeron and Gabriella Papadakis from France taking the silver medal and Alex Shibutani and Maia Shibutani from United States taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two separate rounds. The first round allows the competitors to perform a routine of around 2:50 minutes, after which the athletes with the twenty best scores perform another routine of around 4:00 minutes. The pair with the best score after two rounds is the winner.
Preview[]
Twenty-four pairs qualified for the event, with the most chances of Olympic gold with former champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, after they finished second four years prior. They were definitely challenged by the reigning world champions Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron and the pair of Alex and Maia Shibutani. However, mistakes were easily made, and there were plenty of other pairs who would take their chances for an Olympic medal, such as Madison Hubbell and Zachary Donohue, Madison Chock and Evan Bates, and Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte, as the top pairs in the finals of the Grand Prix, Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje as the fifth place at the world championships, and Ekaterina Bobrova and Dmitri Soloviev as the silver medalist at the European championships.
