The competition exists out of two separate stages. The qualification stage includes the four events of figure skating with short programs of the men's singles, the ladies' singles, and the pair skating, and the short dance. The teams get points based on their result in the round, and after the qualification, the five best teams advance to the final. The final includes the free programs of the singles and pair events, and the free dance. After the eight events, the team with the most points wins the competition.

Ten teams qualified for the inaugural edition of the event, with the home team Russia, Canada, and the United States as the big favorites for the title. Russia had very strong competitors in most events, with Evgeny Plushchenko and Yulia Lipnitskaya in the individual events and two very strong pair skating teams. The Canadian team featured former world and Olympic champions in Patrick Chan, Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, and Kirsten Moore-Towers and Dylan Moscovitch, while the American team had a very strong ice dancing duo in Meryl Davis and Charlie White. Some of the remaining teams, such as Japan, Italy, and China mainly specialized in a single event, but could surprise with a medal.
