The men's singles of Figure Skating 2010 during the 2010 Winter Olympics was held on 16-18 February 2010 in the Pacific Coliseum. With 30 athletes competing, the event was won by Evan Lysacek from USA, with Evgeni Plushenko from Russia taking the silver medal and Daisuke Takahashi from Japan taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two separate rounds. The first round allows the competitors to perform a routine of a maximum 2:50 minutes, after which the athletes with the twenty-four best scores perform another routine of around 4:30 minutes. The competitor with the best score after two rounds is the winner.
Preview[]
Thirty athletes qualified for the event with Evan Lysacek as reigning world champion after the absence of defending Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko. Patrick Chan and Brian Joubert finished on the podium at the last world championships, all within 10 points of the American, but there were plenty of other medal contenders. The American skaters almost dominated the most recent Grand Prix finals, with Johnny Weir and Jeremy Abbott finishing in the top 4, only behind Nobunari Oda. Daisuke Takahashi and Tomas Verner completed that field. Other potential outsiders included defending silver medalist Stephane Lambiel, Denis Ten, and Samuel Contesti.
