Figure Skating 2010/Ice dancing

The ice dancing of Figure Skating 2010 during the 2010 Winter Olympics was held on 19-22 February 2010 in the Pacific Coliseum. With 23 pairs competing, the event was won by Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue from Canada, with Meryl Davis and Charlie White from United States taking the silver medal and Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin from Russia taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of three separate rounds. The first round allows the competitors to perform a routine of exactly 1:43 minutes, after which all pairs perform another routine of around 2:30 minutes. The third performance is a free dance of around 4:00, in which all pairs perform again. The pair with the best score after three rounds is the winner.

Preview[]

Twenty-three pairs qualified for the event with the pairs of Meryl Davis and Charlie White and Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir as some of the big favorites, after finishing in the top two of the latest Grand Prix finals. However, the Olympic competition still followed the format of three performances, with a compulsory dance, an original dance, and a free dance. One of the last major competitions in this format was the world championships, which won by Oksana Domnina and Maxim Shabalin, in front of Tanith Balbin and Benjamin Agosto. Some of the other medal contenders and outsiders included Nathalie Pechalat/Fabian Bourzat, Sinead Kerr/John Kerr, Jana Khohklova/Sergey Novitski, and Anna Cappellini/Luca Lanotte.
