The ladies' singles of Figure Skating 2006 during the 2006 Winter Olympics was held on 21-23 February 2006 in the Palavela. With 30 athletes competing, the event was won by Shizuka Arakawa from Japan, with Sasha Cohen from United States taking the silver medal and Irina Slutskaya from Russia taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of two separate rounds. The first round allows the competitors to perform a routine of a maximum 2:50 minutes, after which the athletes with the twenty-four best scores perform another routine of around 4:00 minutes. The competitor with the best score after two rounds is the winner.
Preview[]
Thirty athletes qualified for the event with the reigning world champion Irina Slutskaya as one of the big favorites, although she was recently beaten by a strong Japanese delegation at the most recent Grand Prix finals. However, Miki Ando was the only one of three representatives to have taken part at both competitions, and she was supported by Fumie Suguri and Shizuka Arakawa. Sasha Cohen and Carolina Kostner had won the other medals at the last world championships. Other medal contenders and outsiders included Elena Sokolova, Elena Liashenko, and Joannie Rochette.
