The ice dancing of Figure Skating 1988 during the 1988 Winter Olympics was held on 21-23 February 1988 in the Stampede Corral and Olympic Saddledome. With 20 pairs competing, the event was won by Natalia Bestemianova and Andrei Boukine from Soviet Union, with Marina Klimova and Serguei Ponomarenko from Soviet Union taking the silver medal and Robert McCall and Tracy Wilson from Canada taking bronze.

Format

The competition exists out of three separate rounds. The first round allows the pairs to perform three compulsory dances. All pairs also compete in an original set pattern dance routine on a tango and a free dance of 4:00 minutes. The scores are based on the individual rankings of the judges, with each position earning one point. In each round, the pairs are ranked based on these ordinal points. The pair with the fewest classification points after two rounds wins the competition.

Twenty pairs qualified for the event with the Soviet pairs Natalia Bestemianova and Andrei Boukine and Marina Klimova and Serguei Ponomarenko as the big favorites, after winning silver and bronze four years prior, and having won gold and silver at the world championships in the previous three editions. Tracy Wilson and Robert McCall had won the bronze medal two years running and were favored to medal over Natalie Annenko/Genrikh Sretenski, Suzanne Semanick/Scott Gregory, and Kathrin Beck/Christoff Beck.
