Diving is one of the longest running summer sports at the Olympic Games. It was introduced as "fancy diving" at the 1904 Summer Olympics, and its program has only been changed three times in the history of its inclusion.
In 1908, an event for springboard diving replaced the "plunge for distance", where athletes competed for who could reach the furthest underwater. The diving program was extended at the 1912 Summer Olympics when women were allowed to compete in the platform event. At the 2000 Summer Olympics, the program was extended again, with the inclusion of synchronized events.
Competitors from China had been banned from competing in the discipline, due to the political situation, but this ban was lifted in 1984, after which the Chinese team has been a dominant force in the sport.
