The women's sprint of Cross-Country Skiing 2022 during the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 8 February 2022 in the Zhangjiakou National Cross-Country Skiing Centre. With 91 athletes competing, the event was won by Jonna Sundling from Sweden, with Maja Dahlqvist from Sweden taking the silver medal and Jessie Diggins from United States taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of a single lap in the free technique. The competition consists of four different phases, with all competitors setting a time in the qualification. The 30 athletes with the best time advance, after which the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final are head-to-head races between six athletes, with the first two advancing to the next round. The athlete with the fastest time in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Ninety-one athletes qualified for the event with Maja Dahlqvist as the leader of the World Cup standings and one of the twenty-three seeded athletes. Jonna Sundling was the reigning world champion, though that was in the classic style, when she finished ahead of Maiken Caspersen Falla and Anamarija Lampic. From the medalists of the 2019 world championships and the defending Olympic medalists, only Falla competed in Beijing, with the 2018 Olympic champion having switched to biathlon. Jessie Diggins, Nadine Faehndrich, Mathilde Myhrvold, and Tiril Udnes Weng were also ranked high in the most recent World Cup standings and could be considered as some of the outsiders for the medals.

The Baltic competitors from Latvia and Lithuania were some of the youngest in the field, with Estere Volfa and Ieva Dainyte competing at the age of 16, followed by Egle Savickaite having turned 17 years old. Latvian Samanta Krampe was also among the youngest athletes in the field, though Tena Hadzic, Nahiara Diaz Gonzalez, and Eduarda Ribera were younger. On the other end of the scale, Jaqueline Mourao made her eighth Olympic appearance in summers and winters since 2004 at the age of 46, and was six years older than Lee Chae-won, who competed in her sixth Olympic Games since having made her debut in 2002. Alena Prochazkova, Maryna Antsybor, Laurien van der Graaff, and Valentyna Kaminska were also some of the most experienced in the field with fifty-nine debutantes.
