The women's skiathlon of Cross-Country Skiing 2022 during the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 5 February 2022 in the Zhangjiakou National Cross-Country Skiing Centre. With 65 athletes competing, the event was won by Therese Johaug from Norway, with Natalia Nepryaeva from ROC taking the silver medal and Teresa Stadlober from Austria taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of four rounds of 3.75 kilometres, of which the first two laps in the free technique and the last half in the classical technique. The athletes started simultaneously, with the competitor with the fastest time after 15 kilometres winning the event.

Preview[]

Sixty-five athletes qualified for the event with Therese Johaug as the reigning world champion and Natalia Nepryaeva as the leader of the World Cup. Johaug won the most recent edition of the world championships over half a minute ahead of the strong Swedish team of Frida Karlsson, Ebba Andersson, and Charlotte Kalla. Krista Parmakoski was the defending bronze medalist, with Katharina Hennig, Jessie Diggins, Kerttu Niskanen, and Tatiana Sorina as some of the other big seeds in the field.

The twin sisters Kaidy Kaasiku and Keidy Kaasiku were the youngest competitors in the field and were four months younger than Helene Marie Fossesholm, with Yilamujiang Dinigeer and Nadja Kalin also having been born in the 21st century. On the other end of the line, Masako Ishida was the most experienced athlete in the field, making her fifth Olympic appearance at the age of 41. The Japanese was a year older than Lee Chae-won, who made her sixth appearance at the Olympic Games. Ishida was also seven years older than Charlotte Kalla, Maryna Antsybor, and Anne Kylloenen, with the first two also following in the number of Olympic appearances with four. Two defending medalists came to compete again in 2022, with only 2018 silver medalist Marit Bjoergen missing out.

Therese Johaug won her fourth Olympic medal after she won a gold medal in the women's relay in 2010, a silver medal in the mass start in 2014 and a bronze medal in the 10 kilometres in 2014. Natalie Nepryaeva also became a repeat Olympic medalist after she won a bronze medal in the women's relay in 2018, while Teresa Stadlober became the first Austrian medalist in cross-country skiing since Mikhail Botwinov won a bronze medal in the mass start in 2006. Kerttu Niskanen just missed out on her third Olympic medal by five seconds, followed by Frida Karlsson as best-ranked debutante in the top 5. Olympic gold medalist Jessie Diggins and 2018 bronze medalist Krista Parmakoski completed the top 7 within a minute from the Norwegian champion.
