Preview[]
Twenty-five pairs qualified for the event with Norway and ROC as the favorites for the title. The teams, which had won gold and silver in 2018, had also won the most medals in the men's cross-country so far and seemed to expand their collection. Italy won silver in the sprint event, while Finland's Iivo Niskanen also won two Olympic medals in the weeks prior, and France was the defending bronze medalist. Other medal contenders and potential outsiders included Great Britain, Sweden, Switzerland, and Czech Republic.
William Poromaa, James Clinton Schoonmaker, and his team mate Ben Ogden were the youngest competitors in the field with all three having been born in the year 2000. Snorri Eythor Einarsson was almost fifteen years older than Poromaa, though he would be making his second Olympic appearance, after 2018. Maurice Manificat was only a month younger than the Icelandic skier, though he had the most Olympic experience as one of three athletes to make their fourth Olympic appearance, together with Andrew Young and Paul Constantin Pepene. Twenty-seven competitors made their Olympic debuts in Beijing.

Norway won the event for the second time in a row, after Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo was also part of the winning combination in 2018, winning his seventh Olympic medal in total. Erik Valnes won his first Olympic medal after he made his Olympic debut in 2022. Finland won the silver medal by less than three seconds from gold, winning their second medal in the history of the event, after they won the event in 2014. Iivo Niskanen was part of the winning team in 2014 as well, and won his fifth Olympic medal, though he was yet to win a silver medal. Joni Maki won his first Olympic medal after he just missed out on the medals in the individual sprint a few days prior. The team representing Russia remained the only team to have won a medal in the men's team sprint since its inauguration in 2006, winning bronze in 2006, 2010 and silver in 2014 and 2018, and once again won bronze in 2022. Alexander Bolshunov won his eighth Olympic medal in two editions of the Olympic Games, and only won his second bronze medal after his medal in the individual sprint in 2018. Alexander Terentev won his second Olympic medal after his bronze medal in the individual sprint in 2022. Sweden, with William Poromaa and Oskar Svensson, just missed out on the medals with a fourth place, just as they had done in the men's relay, with debutants Antoine Cyr and Graham Ritchie from Canada finishing in fifth place in over 20 seconds from the winners from Norway. Italy, France, and Switzerland completed the top 8, with all within a minute from Norway.
