The men's sprint of Cross-Country Skiing 2022 during the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 8 February 2022 in the Zhangjiakou National Cross-Country Skiing Centre. With 90 athletes competing, the event was won by Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo from Norway, with Federico Pellegrino from Italy taking the silver medal and Alexander Terentev from ROC taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of a single lap in the free technique. The competition consists of four different phases, with all competitors setting a time in the qualification. The 30 athletes with the best time advance, after which the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final are head-to-head races between six athletes, with the first two advancing to the next round. The athlete with the fastest time in the final is the winner of the event.
Preview[]
Ninety athletes qualified for the event with defending Olympic champion Johannes Hoesflot Klaebo as the big favorite for the title. He had won the two previous editions of the world championships and lead the World Cup by a comfortable margin ahead of Richard Jouve, Alexander Terentev, and countryman Haavard Solaas Taugboel. Federico Pellegrino was the defending silver medalist, and Alexander Bolshunov was in a high after winning the individual event. Other potential outsiders and medal contenders also included Erik Valnes, Sergey Ustiugov, Oskar Svensson, and Paal Golberg.
Aleksandar Grbovic was the youngest competitor in the field at the age of 18, and he was four months younger than Cirenzhandui and another two months younger than Hugo Hinckfuss, with all three making their Olympic debuts. Carlos Andres Quintana was the oldest competitor in the field, making his Olympic debut at the age of 36, and was one year older than Snorri Eythor Einarsson, Dario Cologna, Maurice Manificat, and Yonathan Jesus Fernandez. Manificat and Cologna were also two of seven athletes to make their fourth appearance at the Olympic Games, with over half of the competitors in the field making their Olympic debuts.
