The women's sprint of Cross-Country Skiing 2018 during the 2018 Winter Olympics was held on 13 February 2018 in the Alpensia Cross-Country Skiing Centre. With 68 athletes competing, the event was won by Stina Nilsson from Sweden, with Maiken Caspersen Falla from Norway taking the silver medal and Krista Parmakoski from Finland taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of a single lap of 1176 metres in the classic technique. The competition consists of four different phases, with all competitors setting a time in the qualification. The 30 athletes with the best time advance, after which the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final are head-to-head races between six athletes, with the first two advancing to the next round. The athlete with the fastest time in the final is the winner of the event.

Preview[]

Sixty-eight athletes qualified for the event with Stina Nilsson and Maiken Caspersen Falla as the big favorites for the gold medal. The latter was the reigning Olympic and world champion, but Nilsson had won eight out of the last ten races on World Cup level. Jessica Diggins won the silver medal at the world championships, as part of the American team that was very strong with also Sadie Bjornsen and Sophie Caldwell. Marit Bjoergen recorded the fastest times in the classical part of the skiathlon, and Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg had won the silver medal in 2014. Other outsiders included Katja Visnar, Laurien van der Graaff, Kathrine Rolsted Harsem, and Anna Dyvik.
