With 62 athletes competing, the event was won by Charlotte Kalla from Sweden, with Marit Bjoergen from Norway taking the silver medal and Krista Parmakoski from Finland taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of four rounds of 3.75 kilometres, of which the first two laps in the classic technique and the last half in the free technique. The athletes started simultaneously, with the competitor with the fastest time after 15 kilometres winning the event.

Preview[]

Sixty-two athletes qualified for the event with some of the Scandinavian competitors as the big favorites. The Norwegian delegation was always strong, with cross-country legend and defending champion Marit Bjoergen, world champion Heidi Weng, world championships silver medalist Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg, and Ragnhild Haga. Charlotte Kalla had won three medals in Sochi and would want to continue her Olympic success, while Krista Parmakoski had also shown exceptional results in the previous four years. Other big medal contenders included Jessica Diggins and Teresa Stadlober, who just missed the podium at the world championships, and Justyna Kowalczyk, the reigning Olympic champion in the 10 kilometres of Sochi. Outsiders also included Nathalie von Siebenthal, Natalie Nepryaeva, Kerttu Niskanen, and Laura Mononen.
