Cornelia Sirch is a swimmer who has competed for East Germany. She competed at the 1988 Summer Olympic Games. She was also selected to swim for the East German team at Los Angeles 1984, but the Eastern Bloc boycott denied her the opportunity to participate.
Sirch was considered one of the world's top female backstrokers in the mid-to-late 1980s. She claimed two bronze in the backstroke double (100 and 200) at Seoul 1988, trailing the winners Kristin Otto and Krisztina Egerszegi by a couple of seconds. She also swam through the backstroke leg in the heats of the 4x100 metres medley relay before Otto replaced her on the East German women's team that won a gold in the final.
Shortly after the Games, Sirch retired from competitive swimming. She cited health problems that attributed to doping enforced on her by East Germany's state program.[1]
