Chinese Taipei, also known as Taiwan, first participated at the Olympic Games in 1956, although Taiwanese athletes have appeared before, as part of Japan and Republic of China (1948). The nation has attended Winter Olympic Games since 1972.
Chinese Taipei has won 36 medals at the Summer Olympic Games, of which most in taekwondo and weightlifting, but it has never won a medal at the Winter Olympics. Due to the political situation of China and Taiwan, Taiwan didn't participate between 1976 and 1980. The country is also not allowed to use the national flag, and to compete under its official name, Republic of China.
The official Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee was created in 1922 and recognized in 1960, although it also represented Republic of China.
