China first participated at the Olympic Games in 1952, although Chinese athletes have appeared before as part of Republic of China. The nation has attended every Winter Olympic Games since 1980.
China has won almost 700 medals at the Summer Olympic Games and Winter Olympic Games, officially in only nine editions of the Summer Olympics. Due to the political situation in China and Taiwan, China didn't participate between 1952 and 1980.
The official Chinese Olympic Committee was created in 1951 and recognized in 1979.
