The competition exists out of three rounds, each with races of up to eight boats. In each round, the top few with the fastest time advance to the next round, together with a number of fastest non-qualifiers. The fastest team in the final is the winner of the event.

Eleven teams qualified for the event with Germany as the overwhelming favorite for the title, having won every world championships since 2017, though they were recently beaten by Spain at the most recent World Cup. Australia was the reigning junior and under 23 world champion, with other potential medal contenders being European silver medalists Slovakia, bronze medalist of the 2018 world championships Hungary, and Portugal.
