The competition exists out of a single elimination tournament, with athletes competing against each other in a head-to-head format. Each contest consists of three rounds of three minutes, with the knockout draw based on a seeding system. After nine minutes, the competitor with the highest number of points advances to the next round. The athlete with the most points in the final wins the event.

Twenty-seven athletes qualified for the event with Amit as the top seed, after winning silver at the most recent world championships. Bilal Bennama won bronze at the most recent world championships and won the European Olympic qualifier, with Mohamed Flissi and defending bronze medalist Hu Jianguan winning the African and Asian contental qualifiers. Yosbany Veitia was the third seed as the 2017 world champion, Shakhobidin Zoirov was the defending Olympic champion, but the field included many more medal contenders, such as Galal Yafai, Gabriel Escobar Mascunano, and Patrick Chinyemba.
