The women's flyweight of Boxing 2016 during the 2016 Summer Olympics was held on 12-20 August 2016 in the Riocentro. With 12 athletes competing, the event was won by Nicola Adams from Great Britain, with Sarah Ourahmoune from France taking the silver medal and Ren Cancan from China and Ingrit Lorena Valencia Victoria from Colombia taking bronze.
Format[]
The competition exists out of a single elimination tournament, with athletes competing against each other in a head-to-head format. Each contest consists of three rounds of three minutes, with the knockout draw based on a seeding system. After nine minutes, the competitor with the highest number of points advances to the next round. The athlete with the most points in the final wins the event.
Preview[]
Twelve athletes qualified for the event with Nicola Adams as the reigning world champion and defending Olympic champion. At the world championships in 2015, she beat Peamwilai Laopeam in the final, with Zhaina Shekerbekova and Sarah Ourahmoune taking bronze. The Frenchwoman would be an opponent to fear in the first round, after defending silver medalist Ren Cancan was seeded before her. Other outsiders included Mandy Bujold and Zohra Ez Zahraoui.
