Twenty-eight teams qualified for the event with the German sleds of Francesco Friedrich and Johannes Lochner as the big favorites for the event. Friedrich had dominated the World Cup season, only missing out on the very last race, in which they finished second behind Oskars Kibermanis. Justin Kripps had also been very consistent, having finished in the top 5 in almost every race, an achievement that was equalled by Benjamin Maier, even though the Austrian bob missed the last two events. Rostislav Gaitiukevich and Brad Hall were some other big contenders for the medals, with other outsiders including the juniors Michael Vogt, Maxim Andrianov, and Hunter Church.
Kim Tae-yang was the youngest competitor in the field at the age of 21, though he was only two weeks younger than Jelen Franjic and almost four months younger than home competitor Ye Jielong, with all three making their Olympic debuts. Edson Luques Bindilatti was the most experienced competitor in the field, making his fifth Olympic appearance at the age of 42, having made his Olympic debut back in 2002. He was five years older than Christopher Spring, who was one of three bobsledders who would be making their fourth edition of the Olympic Games in Beijing, together with Kim Dong-hyun and Justin Kripps.
Francesco Friedrich and Thorsten Margis continued their winning streak, both German competitors winning the two-man and the four-man once again, after they achieved the same feat in 2018. Candy Bauer won his second Olympic medal after he also joined the two to win gold in the four-man in 2018, but Alexander Schueller won an Olympic title at his Olympic debut. Florian Bauer and Johannes Lochner finished behind Friedrich and Margis for the second time in Beijing, after they also won the silver medal in the two-man, while Christian Rasp and Christopher Weber won their first Olympic medals. Justin Kripps also won his second Olympic medal, after he won the shared gold medal in the two-man in 2018 and took Canada to a bronze medal finish in this event. Benjamin Coakwell, Ryan Sommer, and Cam Stones all won their first Olympic medals, beating the third German bob by a very narrow margin. Germany just missed out on the medal sweep by sixth-hundredths of a second, with 2014 Olympic champions Latvia finishing on fifth place. Great Britain and the two bobs representing the ROC completed the top 8.
