The mixed relay of Biathlon 2022 during the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 5 February 2022 in the Zhangjiakou National Biathlon Centre. With 20 teams competing, the event was won by the team from Norway, with France taking the silver medal and ROC taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of each athlete conducting three rounds of 2.0 kilometres, broken up by shooting at five targets. Each athlete has up to three additional shots for each round, and each missed target afterwards causes the athlete to have to conduct an additional round of 150 meters. The team with the fastest time after 4x6 kilometres is the winner.

Preview[]

Twenty teams qualified for the event with quite a few medal contenders though the favorite for gold seemed to be Norway after winning silver in 2018. Belarus and defending Olympic champions France also started from the first start row, but teams such as Sweden, Germany, and Italy also had big names in their lineup. Other potential medal contenders and outsiders also included ROC, Finland, and Austria.

Ziva Klemencic was the youngest athlete in the field at the age of 21, only a few months younger than Amy Baserga, as the only two athletes born after 1 January 2000, with both making their Olympic debuts. Simon Eder was the oldest competitor in the field, making his fourth Olympic appearance at the age of 38, and was almost three years older than Valentina Semerenko, who was the only athlete in the field to make her fifth edition of the Olympic Games, and Susan Dunklee, with ten other athletes having been born before 1 January 1990.

Norway won the title in the event for the second time since its inauguration in 2014, after the nation won the silver medal in the previous edition in 2018. Of the Norwegian team, Johannes Thingnes Boe won his fourth Olympic medal, his older brother Tarjei Boe won his third Olympic medal, Tiril Eckhoff won her sixth Olympic medal, and Marte Olsbu Roeiseland also won her third Olympic medal. The defending champions from France won silver this time, finishing less than a second behind the Norwegian gold medals, with an Olympic medalist in their ranks too. Anais Chevalier-Bouchet won her second Olympic medal after the bronze medal in the relay in 2018, though Quentin Fillon Maillet, Emilien Jacquelin, and Julia Simon won their first Olympic medals, the last of which made her debut in Beijing. The team representing the ROC won their first-ever medal in the mixed relay, with all four also winning their first-ever Olympic medals. Alexander Loginov and Uliana Nigmatullina did have previous Olympic experience, but Eduard Latypov and Kristina Reztsova made their Olympic debuts in the mixed relay in Beijing. Sweden missed out on the medals by almost 40 seconds, which also a considerable gap to fifth-placed Germany, followed by Belarus and the United States. The 2018 bronze medalists from Italy disappointed with a ninth place, behind Switzerland.
