The men's relay of Biathlon 2022 during the 2022 Winter Olympics was held on 15 February 2022 in the Zhangjiakou National Biathlon Centre. With 21 teams competing, the event was won by the team from Norway, with France taking the silver medal and ROC taking bronze.

Format[]

The competition exists out of each athlete conducting three rounds of 2.5 kilometres, broken up by shooting at five targets. Each athlete has up to three additional shots for each round, and each missed target afterwards causes the athlete to have to conduct an additional round of 150 meters. The team with the fastest time after 4x7.5 kilometres is the winner.

Preview[]

Twenty-one teams qualified for the event with Norway and France as the likely favorites for gold. The two nations had won seven out of nine available medals so far in the individual events, with only Belarus and ROC winning a silver and a bronze medal, respectively. Sweden was the defending Olympic champion, with Germany having taken bronze in 2018, and other potential medal contenders also included Ukraine, Italy, and Switzerland.

Blagoy Todev was the youngest athlete in the field at the age of 20, and he was a month younger than Lovro Planko, with both making their Olympic debuts. Cesar Beauvais, Tommaso Giacomel, and Niklas Hartweg were the only competitors in the field born after 1 January 2000, though on the other end there was Simon Eder, who would be making his fourth Olympic appearance at the age of 38. The Austrian biathlete was four years older than Vladimir Iliev and Jakov Fak, who would match him with their fourth edition of the Olympic Games, and Artem Pryma, who was due to do only one less with three. Benjamin Weger, Lukas Hofer, and Tarjei Boe also had set their fourth Olympic appearance behind their names in Beijing.

Results[]

Norway won the Olympic title after their silver medal in 2018, with Johannes Thingnes Boe winning his seventh Olympic medal and third Olympic title in Beijing. His older brother Tarjei Boe won his sixth Olympic medal, though he also competed in the men's relay in 2010, in which Norway finished on top of the podium as well. Vetle Sjaastad Christiansen and Sturla Holm Laegreid won their first Olympic medals after both made their Olympic debuts in Beijing. The team from France recorded their best result in the men's relay ever, after they won bronze medals in the event in 1994, 2002, and 2006. Simon Desthieux won his second Olympic medal after he won the title in the mixed relay in 2018, Emilien Jacquelin also won his second Olympic medal after the silver medal in the mixed relay in 2022, and Quentin Fillon Maillet won his fifth Olympic medal in five events in Beijing. Fabien Claude won his first medal at the Olympic Games, though he had made his debut in Beijing. With the podium being exactly the same as in the mixed relay, the team representing the ROC had Eduard Latypov and Alexander Loginov winning multiple medals at a single edition of the Olympic Games as well. Said Karimulla Khalili and Maxim Tsvetkov made their Olympic debuts in Beijing and crowned it with their first bronze medal in the men's relay. 2018 bronze medalists Germany missed out on their second consecutive medal in the event by 20 seconds, while 2018 Olympic champions Sweden finished fifth, ahead of Canada, Italy, and Belarus, which remained within two minutes from the winners from Norway.
