Biathlon has been featured at the Olympic Games since the 1924 Winter Olympics, although it did not return until the 1960 Winter Olympics. It did appear as a demonstration event in St. Moritz 1928, Garmisch-Partenkirchen 1936 and St. Moritz 1948. Women have been allowed to compete since Albertville 1992.
Biathlon combines Cross Country Skiing and Shooting in one race, and it is only one of two disciplines at the Winter Olympic Games to combine multiple disciplines.
European countries have been known to do well in biathlon. Canada and Kazakhstan are the only two non-European countries to have won at least one medal in biathlon, combined winning 4 out of 225 medals.
